Irom Sharmila, noted civil rights activist who hails from North-East will end her 16 year fast and has decided to contest elections from Manipur.She would end her fast on August 9th which she has been since November 2000 demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). The AFSPA gives special power to Armed Forces for maintaining law and order in state. The act has been enforced in Manipur and J&K. Despite several protests by the people and calls by UN experts the government has not repealed the Act. The rights activists accused the Indian Armed forces of committing atrocities and raping women by taking advantage of this special law.
